International Delegation Explores Ganjasar Monastery’s History and Preservation Efforts

Aghdara:A group of international travelers representing 13 countries, led by Charles Veley, founder of the Most Traveled People club, recently visited the Ganjasar Monastery in the village of Vangli, located in the Aghdara district.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the delegation was briefed on the historical significance and architectural features of Ganjasar Monastery. They were also informed about various illegal interventions that occurred at the complex during the occupation and the subsequent legal issues surrounding these actions.

The monastery is recognized as a prominent example of Albanian architecture, situated on a scenic plateau above the Khachinchay River. Constructed between 1216 and 1238 under the direction of Albanian Prince Hasan Jalal, it served as a central hub for the Albanian Catholicosate for several centuries and housed the last Albanian catholicoi until 1836.

During the occupation, modifications were made to both the architectural structure and interior of the complex, which included damage or alterations to historical stone inscriptions, ornaments, and symbols. Restoration and reconstruction efforts over the years have resulted in changes that have impacted the monument's original appearance.

The delegation also received information about the evidence of interventions recorded during an inspection of the site in 2024. The importance of primary sources, epigraphic materials, archaeological evidence, and comparative architectural analysis was emphasized in determining the historical and cultural identity of the monument.
