International Judo Federation Highlights Ilham Zakiyev’s Historic Achievement

Heidelberg: The International Judo Federation (IJF), in its review of the European Para Judo Championships in Heidelberg, Germany, has highlighted the historic achievement of Azerbaijani Para-judo legend Ilham Zakiyev.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, one of the biggest highlights of the second day was Zakiyev once again standing atop the podium at a major international event. Azerbaijani Para-judo legend Ilham Zakiyev won the European title in the J1 +95kg category, defeating Spain's Rodrigo Suarez Garrosa in the final.

The IJF also highlighted Zakiyev's career, noting his two Paralympic titles, three bronze medals, and three world championships. It was emphasized that more than 20 years after his international debut, Zakiyev continues to compete, win, and make history at the highest level.

The IJF described Zakiyev's victory as one of the symbolic highlights of the Heidelberg championships, which brought together several generations of Para judokas. At the 2026 European Para Judo Championships, Zakiyev made history by becoming European champion for the 10th time, further cementing his legendary status.
