Baku: On May 4, Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis, met with Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Speaker Sahiba Gafarova hailed the successful cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the IPU, highlighting the active engagement of Azerbaijani parliamentarians within the IPU since 2021. She noted that Azerbaijani parliamentarians hold leadership positions in the organization.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Speaker Gafarova also praised the cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, as well as Martin Chungong's support for this collaboration. She expressed her gratitude to the IPU Secretary General for his efforts in advancing mutual cooperation and organizing meetings between the Speakers of the Parliaments of Azerbaijan and Armenia. Gafarova emphasized that these meetings contribute to building confidence between the peoples and expressed optimism that a peace treaty between the two countries would soon be signed, contingent upon amendments to the Armenian Constitution, paving the way for enhanced interparliamentary cooperation.
Gafarova described the IPU as a crucial platform for discussions and dialogue, underscoring President Ilham Aliyev's commitment to fostering relations with the IPU. Chungong echoed these sentiments, praising Azerbaijan's active involvement in IPU events and parliamentarians' leadership roles. He expressed gratitude for President Aliyev's support and highlighted Azerbaijan's trust in the IPU, evidenced by his visit.
During the meeting, Martin Chungong commended the achievements of the Parliamentary Conference held in Azerbaijan during COP29. The meeting concluded with Chungong being awarded the Milli Majlis Medal of Honour for his contributions to fostering dialogue and cooperation among parliaments and strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations between the Milli Majlis and the IPU.
