IPU Secretary General Hails Azerbaijan’s Active Role Within Organization

Baku: On May 4, Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis, met with Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Press and Public Relations Department of the Milli Majlis told APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova highlighted the successful cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the IPU, underlining the active engagement of Azerbaijani parliamentarians within the IPU since 2021. She noted that Azerbaijani parliamentarians hold governing positions within the organization.

The Speaker also acknowledged the collaboration between the Milli Majlis and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network, expressing gratitude for Martin Chungong's support in this endeavor. She emphasized the significance of these partnerships and Chungong's role in facilitating meetings between the Parliament Speakers of Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Sahiba Gafarova expressed optimism about a potential peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia, anticipating that constitutional amendments in Armenia could pave the way for enhanced interparliamentary cooperation. She described the IPU as a vital forum for dialogue, underscoring President Ilham Aliyev's commitment to fostering relations with the IPU.

Martin Chungong commended Azerbaijan's dedication to the IPU under President Ilham Aliyev's leadership, noting the country's active participation in IPU events and representation in its governing bodies. He expressed appreciation for President Aliyev's support, citing his visit as a testament to Azerbaijan's confidence in the organization.

The Secretary General also praised the successful Parliamentary Conference held in Azerbaijan in conjunction with COP29. The meeting concluded with Martin Chungong being awarded the Milli Majlis Medal of Honour, recognizing his contributions to fostering dialogue and cooperation between parliaments and enhancing bilateral and multilateral relations between the Milli Majlis and the IPU.
