Iran Advances Major Railroad Expansion to Enhance International Trade Connectivity


TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, Kheirollah Khademi, has announced significant progress in the expansion of the nation’s railroad network, aiming to bolster its role in major international trade corridors.



According to Trend News Agency, as reported by Trend News Agency, Iran is on track to extend its railroad infrastructure to a total of 9,100 kilometers to improve the connectivity of the North-South and East-West trade corridors. Currently, 5,100 kilometers of railroads are operational, with construction ongoing for an additional 2,800 kilometers. However, work on another 1,200 kilometers is yet to commence.



Highlighting specific projects, Khademi noted that 72 percent of the construction on the Chabahar-Zaheedan railway line has been completed, with expectations to launch the line by March 20, 2025. The completion of this project, backed by an allocation of 200 trillion rials (approximately $456 million), is anticipated to significantly enhance Iran’s logistical capabilities and its strategic position in regional and global trade networks.



The development reflects Iran’s strategic vision to leverage its geographic position and improve infrastructure to facilitate smoother and more efficient international trade.
