Iran and Azerbaijan Aim to Deepen Relations, Focus on Economic and Cultural Ties

TEHRAN: Iran is committed to deepening its relations with Azerbaijan, with a focus on enhancing economic and cultural ties, said Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Chairman of the Parliament of the Islamic Council of Iran, during a meeting with Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament, as reported by Trend News Agency. According to Trend News Agency, the discussion occurred in Geneva and highlighted the mutual interest in strengthening bilateral relations following the recent parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan. Ghalibaf congratulated Gafarova on her re-election and emphasized Iran's strategic emphasis on its relationship with Azerbaijan. He expressed Iran's continued commitment to expanding cooperation at the parliamentary level, which he believes will contribute to regional peace and security. Ghalibaf noted the potential for expanding economic cooperation particularly in transportation and regional communications, advocating for the effective use of opportunities in these sectors. He also undersco red the importance of cooperation within the "3+3" format, involving Russia, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic collaboration in the region. Gafarova reciprocated the sentiments on the Azerbaijani side, acknowledging the dynamic development of ties with Iran across various sectors. She highlighted the significance of bilateral agreements and joint projects that have been instrumental in fostering closer cooperation between the two nations. The meeting also covered the progress of inter-parliamentary relations and the formation of new working groups following the 2024 parliamentary elections in both countries. The speakers discussed their parliaments' active involvement with international parliamentary organizations, which plays a pivotal role in their foreign diplomacy. Additionally, the upcoming parliamentary conference scheduled for November in Baku, as part of COP29, was discussed. Both leaders stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing global climate challenges at multilateral forums. The meeting reflects a continued effort by Iran and Azerbaijan to strengthen their alliance through shared initiatives and strategic cooperation, contributing to a stable and prosperous region.
