Geneva: Iran’s nuclear activities are conducted strictly within the legal boundaries of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and are entirely peaceful in nature, stated Iranian MP Mahmoud Nabavian during a session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Standing Committee on Peace and Security.

According to Trend News Agency, Nabavian emphasized that Iran remains a committed member of the NPT and continues to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) under the treaty’s framework. He reported that the IAEA has conducted 92 percent of its inspections in Iran, underscoring the country’s transparency in its nuclear endeavors.

Nabavian criticized comparisons between Iran’s nuclear activities and those of non-NPT member North Korea as “wrong and unfair.” He reinforced the NPT’s role in recognizing the legitimate right of all signatories to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, asserting that Iran’s nuclear program does not pose a threat to public health or the environ
ment.

The backdrop to Iran’s current nuclear policy includes significant developments such as the implementation of the Comprehensive Joint Plan of Action (JCPOA) by Iran and the P5+1 group in January 2016, aimed at regulating Iran’s nuclear capabilities. However, the landscape shifted in May 2018 when the US withdrew from the agreement and reinstated sanctions on Iran.

In response, by the end of 2020, the Iranian parliament adopted a strategic plan to navigate these sanctions, which led to a reduction in the country’s compliance with the Additional Protocol of the nuclear treaty, consequently decreasing the IAEA’s monitoring capabilities by 20-30 percent.
