Japan reportedly to develop generative AI for research purposes

Japan plans to develop a generative artificial intelligence model to use in scientific research, Nikkei reported on Sunday, APA reports citing Teletrader.

The country’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology will work with the Riken research institute on the project, according to the report.

The generative AI will allegedly initially be used for medical and material research and it will gradually be expanded to other areas. The development of the program for one area is estimated to cost around ¥30 billion ($212 million), the report said. The trial version of the project should be offered to laboratories and companies in fiscal 2025 and it is expected to be made available for researchers nationwide from fiscal 2031.
