Gadabay: The latest installment in AZERTAC's 'If I Were a Tourist' column brings attention to Javanshir Fortress, alternatively known as Koroghlu Fortress. Situated 15 kilometers from the center of Gadabay district, the fortress is positioned amidst high mountains and holds a rich historical significance.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the fortress is strategically perched on a steep cliff between the villages of Galakand and Miskinli. Built in a naturally inaccessible location, the monument stands approximately 2,000 meters above sea level and is accessible only on foot. The hiking trail leading to the fortress spans about 740 meters from the base of the mountain. Visitors are also treated to views of the iconic 'Siemens' Bridge, a renowned symbol of the Gadabay region.
The fortress features walls that are around one meter thick and contains a secret underground passage along with a concealed water pipeline, all constructed for defensive purposes. Some sources indicate that this ancient structure is cataloged among the Caucasian Albanian architectural landmarks and was erected in the 7th century by Javanshir, the ruler of Caucasian Albania.
It is further believed that the legendary Koroghlu once resided in the fortress, utilizing it as one of his primary shelters. During the Siemens era, German media referred to the site as the 'Paradise Fortress,' a nod to its scenic allure. Today, this historic fortress stands as a prominent attraction in Gadabay, drawing both local and international tourists eager to explore the region's heritage.
