Karabakh’s Potential as a Green Energy Hub Discussed by Egyptian Expert

BAKU: Azerbaijan’s liberated territories in Karabakh hold significant potential to become a green energy hub, according to Ahmed Abdoh Tarabeik, an Egyptian expert and researcher on Central Asia and the Caucasus. In an interview with Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC), Tarabeik highlighted the country’s plans for renewable energy and its role in the upcoming COP29 conference.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Tarabeik emphasized Azerbaijan’s strategic efforts to transition to green energy by 2050, using its liberated Karabakh territories as a model for sustainable development. The COP29 conference, set to take place in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024, will focus on global climate change challenges, with Azerbaijan aiming to facilitate consensus on new financing goals for climate adaptation and mitigation.

Tarabeik noted that the transition to green energy is a global necessity, requiring cooperation from industrialized nations to support developing countries. He outlined the need for industri
alized nations to contribute more significantly to the green transformation, both technically and financially, to combat climate change effectively.

Additionally, Tarabeik identified emerging climate technologies being implemented globally, which include precision agriculture, increased energy efficiency, and climate-smart agricultural practices. Azerbaijan’s initiatives for the COP29 conference reflect these innovative approaches, aiming to secure voluntary contributions and grants to address climate-related disasters.

Azerbaijan’s potential as a renewable energy market is enhanced by its natural resources, including hydroelectric power, wind energy, and solar capabilities, making it attractive for international investment. The country plans to export renewable energy alongside its traditional oil and gas exports, with ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gases significantly by 2030 and 2050.

The reconstruction of Karabakh’s infrastructure in line with green energy principles positions the region as a k
ey area for Azerbaijan’s sustainable development goals. President Ilham Aliyev has announced plans to transform Karabakh into a “zero net emission” zone by 2050, reinforcing Azerbaijan’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
