Kumtor Mine Boosts Kyrgyzstan’s Mining Sector, Says Prime Minister

Kyrgyzstan – Kumtor is meeting the expectations of the people, Japarov reported that in 2024, 1 billion soms would be allocated for geological exploration. He highlighted Kumtor as a major success, noting that the mining sector’s profit increased from 18.2 billion soms in 2020 to 48.4 billion soms in 2022, a 2.5-fold increase. The Prime Minister mentioned plans to develop tailing dumps containing 50 tons of gold, with an expected extraction of 5 tons of gold per year starting in 2025-2026.

According to 24.kg News Agency, the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, in a statement at a Parliament meeting. He announced that the focus for next year would be on geological exploration of minerals, emphasizing the significant contribution of the Kumtor mine to the country’s mining sector.

Additionally, Japarov stated that the Kyrgyz Mining Combine, which had been declared bankrupt, would soon be transferred to state ownership due to investors’ failure to fulfill their promises. Addressing the construction sector, he stressed the importance of completing long-standing projects, with 49.7 billion soms already invested over three years. For 2024, an 8 billion soms allocation is requested for construction, though he acknowledged that double this amount might be needed. Japarov also mentioned the introduction of banking support for contracts to address issues like delayed construction and budget overruns.
