Leyla Aliyeva Engages in Environmental Discussions with UN Under-Secretary-General in Bonn

Bonn: During her visit to Bonn, Germany, Leyla Aliyeva met with Yasmine Fouad, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the meeting involved an exchange of information regarding Azerbaijan's initiatives aimed at environmental protection, sustainable land resource utilization, and addressing the challenges posed by desertification and drought. Discussions also covered projects and initiatives led by the IDEA Public Union, focusing on environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and ecological sustainability both within Azerbaijan and in the wider region.

The dialogue placed particular emphasis on tree-planting campaigns, expanding green areas, and safeguarding existing forest and tree resources as strategies to mitigate climate change, prevent land degradation, and maintain ecological balance.

The parties also exchanged views on the environmental and socio-economic impacts of the declining Caspian Sea water levels. They discussed potential effects on coastal ecosystems, biodiversity, and regional environmental security, exploring opportunities for cooperation in further study and identification of joint solutions.

The meeting underscored the importance of timely measures to prevent drought and desertification. Additionally, the discussion included potential collaboration between the IDEA Public Union and the UNCCD in environmental protection, drought and land degradation combat, and promoting environmental awareness.
