Accra:Bayern Munich Luis Diaz delivered an impressive performance, scoring a hat-trick as Bayern Munich defeated RB Leipzig 6-1 on Saturday, reclaiming the top spot in the Bundesliga and ending a streak of two consecutive draws.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the match saw Bayern Munich, under Vincent Kompany's guidance, dominate from the start with aggressive pressing and attacking play. This intensity came after disappointing draws against Augsburg and Viking Stavanger.
Diaz initiated the scoring in the 12th minute, capitalizing on a pass from Joshua Kimmich to beat Leipzig's goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. Aleksandar Pavlovic extended the lead in the 26th minute, assisted by Diaz's play, while Michael Olise added a third with a precise shot from 18 meters just eight minutes later. Leipzig struggled to control Bayern's dynamic movements, with Vandevoordt making several crucial saves to prevent an even larger halftime deficit.
Continuing their dominance in the second half, Diaz scored his second goal in the 47th minute, followed by Harry Kane, who capitalized on Nathaniel Brown's delivery to score six minutes later. Kompany then made strategic substitutions to rest key players for their upcoming Champions League match against Arsenal.
Diaz completed his hat-trick with a powerful long-range shot in the 69th minute. Although Vandevoordt managed to deflect an Olise shot onto the crossbar, Leipzig managed to secure a late consolation goal through Maksimovic in stoppage time.
Leipzig's coach, Martin Demichelis, acknowledged Bayern's superiority, stating, "Today we were a completely different team. We were far too passive without the ball and offered very little going forward. We have to congratulate Bayern. You can lose here, but not the way we did today."
This victory places Bayern Munich back at the top of the Bundesliga with 14 points from six matches, leading Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Leipzig has fallen to seventh place with nine points, while Freiburg remains third, trailing by one point but with a game in hand.
In other matches, Borussia Dortmund lost their top position after a goalless draw at Union Berlin. Mainz rose to fifth place following a 1-0 win at Schalke, Elversberg defeated Augsburg 4-3 to move into sixth, Hamburg overcame Stuttgart 1-0, and Werder Bremen came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Paderborn.
