Mass Graves Like Open Wounds, Says ICMP Director-General

Baku:Mass graves continue to symbolize unresolved pain and loss, according to Kathryne Bomberger, Director-General of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), during the Fourth International Conference held as part of the Baku Dialogue on Missing Persons.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Bomberger expressed gratitude to the Government of Azerbaijan for hosting the significant event focused on the issue of missing persons. She emphasized that for the ICMP, discussions on missing persons are crucial as they aim to provide families and society with reliable and accurate information, as well as restore rights, ensure justice and accountability, and uphold the right to know the truth and receive compensation.

Bomberger highlighted that addressing these issues is an investment in peace and security. She noted that unresolved questions surrounding missing persons can linger in the memories of families and communities for generations, eroding trust and confidence in governments. Societies equipped with the institutions and capabilities to determine the fate of missing persons are better positioned to handle the aftermath of conflicts, disasters, and crises.
