Media Tour Organized to Lachin International Airport Highlights Region’s Strategic Importance

Lachin: A media tour was organized at Lachin International Airport, APA’s local bureau reports. Narmin Khalilova, head of the Airport’s Public Relations Department, stated that the opening of the airport is a historic milestone: “This is Azerbaijan’s ninth international airport and the third such facility built in the liberated territories.”

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Lachin Airport is a symbol of return and revival. The airport is located in a complex mountainous terrain, at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level. This project is also a significant engineering achievement, demonstrating Azerbaijan’s professionalism, strategic thinking, and ability to execute ambitious projects in challenging conditions. The airport serves as a key transportation hub connecting Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur with other parts of the country and international routes, poised to accelerate the region’s economic, social, and logistical integration. It is expected to significantly boost tourism, transportation, and investment in the region.

A runway measuring 3,000 meters in length and 60 meters in width has been built at the airport, capable of accommodating any type of aircraft. The 5,000-square-meter terminal building has the capacity to serve at least 200 passengers per hour. For passenger convenience, the terminal includes a VIP lounge, check-in and security systems, baggage conveyors, retail outlets, and food courts. The fully automated Air Traffic Control Tower ensures that flights are managed in compliance with international regulations and safety standards. The infrastructure established at the airport enables the safe and efficient conduct of flights in adherence to ICAO and IATA standards.

The airport’s facilities fully comply with international standards. The apron, covering more than 60,000 square meters, is designed to simultaneously host and service eight airplanes. The terminal building includes a VIP lounge, check-in and security zones, catering facilities, baggage systems, and digital infrastructure.

The complex also features a modern air traffic control tower, two transformer stations, backup generators, pump and wastewater treatment systems, video surveillance, and a high-speed communication system. All facilities are equipped with the latest technologies to ensure smooth operations.

The opening ceremony of Lachin International Airport was held yesterday, attended by President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, who jointly cut the ribbon to mark the symbolic opening of the airport.
