MEPs pass resolution in favor of granting EU candidate status to Ukraine, Moldova

The European Parliament adopted on Thursday a resolution in support of EU candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said after the voting, adding that the resolution was approved overwhelmingly, according to TASS.

Like all European Parliament resolutions, it is of advisory nature. The decision on granting EU candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova will be taken at an EU summit later in the day. After the summit’s decision, it must be formally approved by the European Parliament.

Earlier on Thursday, European Council President Charles Michel expressed confidence that the EU summit would grant the candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. On June 17, the European Commission recommended granting such status to Ukraine and Moldova, while postponing the decision on Georgia. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stressed that in order to further advance towards accession, Ukraine should first carry out major reforms and deoligarchization of the country.

Roberta Metsola said the candidate status would give Ukraine hope and perspective, but a lot had to be done for the EU accession.
