Baku: 'Hosting WUF13 reflects the growing international recognition of Azerbaijan's active role in advancing sustainable development, climate action, and multilateral cooperation under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev,' Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the President of Azerbaijan for Climate Issues, said in a video address to the participants of an event organized by the Ministry on the theme 'Early Warning and Climate-Resilient Cities,' as part of WUF13.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Babayev emphasized Azerbaijan's dedication to global climate cooperation, as demonstrated at COP29 in Baku. The conference highlighted Azerbaijan's commitment to practical climate action, producing significant outcomes on climate change adaptation and implementation. It underscored the importance of enhancing resilience in cities and communities amid escalating climate crises.

Babayev pointed out that climate change is transforming urban environments worldwide. The frequency, intensity, and unpredictability of extreme weather events are increasing. The World Meteorological Organization reports that the past decade has been the warmest on record, with the last three years being the hottest ever observed globally.

Cities are at the forefront of these challenges, facing heatwaves, storms, droughts, and landslides that damage infrastructure, disrupt essential services, and impact millions globally. Early warning systems are crucial for reducing loss of life and injury, minimizing economic losses, and safeguarding critical infrastructure during climate-related hazards.
