Paris:A Pakistani political analyst has criticized the French government's handling of recent protests, highlighting structural and cumulative pressures that have driven citizens to the streets.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Imran Bhatti, the analyst, noted that these pressures include a decade of fiscal constraints, a struggling education system, rising energy and food costs, and a broader European cost-of-living crisis. He argued that no single French president could have resolved these systemic issues alone and that the current unrest reflects deeper structural strains.
Bhatti identified three key methodological failures in the government's response first, treating early school protests as isolated incidents rather than symptoms of a broader movement; second, an intelligence and deployment failure during the October 17 security breakdown; and third, a narrow response focused only on education, despite the movement's broader cost-of-living grievances. He emphasized that these failures have exacerbated the protests.
Addressing whether the unrest signifies a failure of President Emmanuel Macron's leadership, Bhatti suggested that while individual decisions didn't create the crisis, the government's approach has worsened the situation. He noted that the government's strategy of blaming political opposition has been ineffective, failing to address the root causes and fracturing civic trust.
