Person Arrested for Spying for a Foreign Country Sentenced in Nakhchivan

Nakhchivan: The court investigation in the criminal case initiated by the State Security Service (SSS) against Siyafat Farzaliyev, who was accused of treason and illegal possession of firearm components, has been completed, APA reports. A verdict was announced in the criminal case reviewed under the chairmanship of Judge Faig Heydarov at the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Court for Grave Crimes. Under the verdict, the defendant, Siyafat Farzaliyev, was sentenced to 15 years and 6 months of imprisonment.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the charges against Siyafat Heydar oglu Farzaliyev included being recruited into secret cooperation by representatives of a foreign intelligence service in exchange for material benefits. He was accused of deliberately carrying out espionage activities on their instructions against the sovereignty, territorial integrity, state security, and defense capability of the Republic of Azerbaijan, thereby committing treason. Additionally, he was found to have intentionally acquired, carried, and stored firearm components illegally.

Farzaliyev was detained as a result of operational-search measures carried out by the State Security Service and brought under investigation. The defendant faced charges under Articles 228.1 (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of firearms, their components, ammunition, explosives and devices) and 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
