Antalya: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, Transitional President of the Syrian Arab Republic, in Antalya on April 17. The meeting marked another step in the ongoing dialogue between the two nations, following their previous engagements during Ahmed al-Sharaa's visit to Azerbaijan last year and the 4th Antalya Diplomacy Forum.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the leaders discussed the progress made in strengthening the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Syria, particularly after the changes in Syria's political landscape. A significant portion of the conversation focused on the energy sector, with both leaders underscoring the importance of the project to export Azerbaijani gas to Syria via Turkey. This initiative is expected to enhance Syria's energy security and contribute substantially to its development.
Ahmed al-Sharaa reiterated his appreciation for the support extended by Azerbaijan to Syria, highlighting the positive impact of these efforts. The meeting also included discussions on the future of bilateral relations, emphasizing the role of mutual visits and high-level contacts in fostering stronger ties.
The leaders expressed their concern regarding regional tensions and emphasized the need for diplomatic solutions to existing conflicts. President Ilham Aliyev took the opportunity to invite Ahmed al-Sharaa to visit Azerbaijan, an invitation that was warmly accepted by the Syrian leader.
