President Ilham Aliyev: Half of Azerbaijan’s Gas Exports Now Go to EU Member States

Baku: Energy security is one of the most important factors of national security, President Ilham Aliyev said in a press statement with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, four years ago, the President of the European Commission's visit to Azerbaijan was also of great importance from this perspective. During that visit, a Memorandum of Understanding on a Strategic Partnership in the Field of Energy was signed. Since then, Azerbaijan's natural gas exports to the member states of the European Union have increased by approximately 65 percent. Currently, half of Azerbaijan's gas exports are destined for European Union member states. Overall, 10 member states of the European Union purchase natural gas from Azerbaijan, and there is potential to further expand this geography.

President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that energy security is a critical component of national security for every country. Azerbaijan has significantly contributed to the creation of infrastructure for transporting oil and gas through political efforts, diplomatic activity, and financial investments. The Southern Gas Corridor is highlighted as a prominent example of joint efforts. This integrated pipeline system, stretching 3,500 kilometers, now serves as the main route for transporting Azerbaijan's natural gas to Europe.
