President Ilham Aliyev Inaugurates ‘Gozlukorpu’ Hydroelectric Power Plant in Aghdara District

Aghdara: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev attended the opening of the 'Gozlukorpu' Hydroelectric Power Plant in the village of Gozlukorpu, Aghdara district. The event marked a significant step towards the development of sustainable energy in the region.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Chairman of the Board of 'Azerenerji' OJSC, Baba Rzayev, provided insights into the current status of hydropower plants in Garabagh and East Zangezur, as well as the hydropower potential of the Tartarchay river chain. The liberated territories are home to 38 hydropower plants, producing 750 million kilowatt-hours of green energy in 2025, saving 160 million cubic meters of natural gas, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 280,000 tons.

The Tartarchay river's hydropower potential includes 30 stations, with 22 operated by 'Azerenerji' OJSC, 5 under construction, and 3 in planning. The river is entirely within Azerbaijan. President Aliyev's directive to establish Garabagh and East Zangezur as a 'green energy' zone led to the construction of the 'Gozlukorpu' Hydroelectric Power Plant, with a capacity of 14.7 MW.

The project overcame challenges such as harsh climate conditions and complex logistics. A headwater intake structure was built at 955 meters above sea level, and a 13-kilometre diversion pipeline was laid to channel water to the station. Modern energy-production equipment, capable of varying productivity based on water flow, was installed.

The station connects to the national energy system via an open switchgear and integrates into the digital control system through an optical cable line. Annually, it is projected to generate 43 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, saving 9.5 million cubic meters of natural gas and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 18,000 tons.

Environmental preservation was prioritized, with hydraulic structures preventing river fish from entering the pipeline and ensuring water quality remains unchanged. The use of eco-friendly technology supports the river's ecosystem and aids in water resource formation.
