President Ilham Aliyev Meets Prefect of Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of Holy See

Baku: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received George Jacob Koovakad, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See, on June 16. During their meeting, both parties acknowledged the successful development of relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See, highlighting the role of reciprocal visits in strengthening bilateral ties. The upcoming visit of George Jacob Koovakad to Azerbaijan's regions was particularly emphasized.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, George Jacob Koovakad expressed gratitude for the warm reception and conveyed greetings from Pope Leo XIV and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, to President Aliyev. In response, President Aliyev extended his own greetings to Pope Leo XIV and Cardinal Parolin.

President Aliyev fondly recalled his visit to the Vatican and his meeting with the late Pope Francis, as well as the Pope's visit to Azerbaijan. Both sides appreciated the historical coexistence of different peoples and religions in Azerbaijan, highlighting the nation's role as a center of tolerance and multiculturalism, contributing to interreligious and intercultural dialogue globally.

The Catholic Church's activities in Azerbaijan were discussed, noting the ongoing construction of a second Catholic church in the country. The meeting also addressed cooperation between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Holy See, with emphasis on the Foundation's efforts to preserve cultural heritage and promote interreligious dialogue.

Discussions included prospects for future cooperation and issues of mutual interest between Azerbaijan and the Holy See. During the meeting, President Aliyev presented George Jacob Koovakad with an invitation letter for Pope Leo XIV to visit Azerbaijan.
