President Ilham Aliyev Meets Secretary General of Inter-Parliamentary Union

Baku: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). During the conversation, the parties fondly recalled their previous meetings.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Secretary General congratulated President Aliyev on Azerbaijan's advancements in the peace agenda with Armenia and the restoration of territorial integrity and sovereignty. President Aliyev expressed gratitude for the congratulations and noted the progress in peace discussions between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington. He also mentioned that economic and trade relations between the two countries have commenced, highlighting Azerbaijan's unilateral decision to lift restrictions on transit goods to Armenia.

The President's participation via video link in the 8th European Political Community Summit in Yerevan was described as a historic event in normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. President Aliyev acknowledged the IPU's role in fostering parliamentary dialogue between the two nations and facilitating meetings between their parliamentary speakers to advance the peace process.

The discussion also emphasized the successful cooperation between Azerbaijan and the IPU. The Secretary General praised Azerbaijan's active participation in the IPU and its contributions to inter-parliamentary dialogue. Additionally, the meeting addressed the ongoing restoration efforts in liberated territories, the challenges posed by landmines, and their impact on civilians and reconstruction. Both parties exchanged views on the current state of cooperation and the future of inter-parliamentary relations.
