TASHKENT—President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, accompanied by First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva and their daughter Leyla Aliyeva, visited the Independence Monument in Tashkent on August 22. A guard of honor welcomed the Azerbaijani President at the site, where he laid a wreath in tribute to Uzbekistan’s independence.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Independence Monument, erected to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence, symbolizes the rich three-thousand-year history of the Uzbek people. The 60-meter-high monument is a central feature of the “Yangi Uzbekiston” (“New Uzbekistan”) complex, which honors the country’s history and prominent figures. The visit by the Azerbaijani delegation concluded with a photo session at the monument.
