Baku: In the areas surrounding Baku, efforts are underway to enhance the railway transport infrastructure. Plans include the restoration of the Yeni Surakhani-Hovsan, Bakikhanov-Bina-Gala, and Zabrat-Mashtagha-Baghlar railway lines. Renovations of existing stations and the construction of new ones are also on the agenda, as stated by Anar Rzayev, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA), during a roundtable focused on the State Program's implementation over the past year.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, an analysis of the road infrastructure along these lines was conducted in 2025, leading to the initiation of design work, some of which has already been completed. Optimization efforts have determined the locations of stations along the lines to be restored.
Anar Rzayev highlighted the importance of the Absheron circular railway route, which includes the Baku-Khirdalan-Sumgayit and Baku-Pirshaghi-Sumgayit lines. Recent modernization efforts have increased the number of trips and improved service quality, leading to a rise in weekday passenger numbers from 36,000 to 43,000. Digitalization measures, such as online ticket sales and mobile applications, have been implemented, and stations have been modernized.
Improvements are also underway on the Baku-Khirdalan-Sumgayit line to enhance train dispatch capacity and passenger service. The construction of the Darnagul stop is progressing, with 60% of the work completed. Plans are in place for additional stops at Bash Keshla and Bineqadi stations.
The Baku-Pirshaghi-Sumgayit line is also set for modernization to increase train dispatch and passenger capacity. New stops are planned for the settlements of Kurdakhani, Fatmayi, and Saray, along with a stop at Narimanov station.
Anar Rzayev mentioned the restoration of the Guzdek-Garadagh line as part of the State Program. Once restored, an increase in passenger trains on the Baku-Khirdalan-Sumgayit railway line is anticipated, primarily facilitated by freight trains operating in this direction.
