Railways Contribute Minimal to Azerbaijan’s Transport Carbon Emissions

BAKU: Railways in Azerbaijan contribute only 1% to the country’s transport carbon emissions, highlighting their minimal environmental impact compared to other modes of transport. The transportation sector is responsible for 15% of Azerbaijan’s total carbon emissions, according to insights shared by Elnur Soltanov, the Executive Director of COP29 and Deputy Minister of Energy, during the “Sustainable Transport for the Future” event.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Elnur Soltanov detailed the distribution of emissions within the transportation sector, revealing that a significant 92% of emissions are attributed to land transport. Air transport accounts for 5% of these emissions, while maritime transport contributes 2%. The Deputy Minister emphasized the relatively low impact of rail transport on the country’s carbon footprint.

Elnur Soltanov also provided context on the broader environmental impact, noting that Azerbaijan’s total carbon emissions amounted to 61 million tons in 2022. The data underscores
the need for strategic planning in reducing emissions from dominant contributors within the transportation sector.
