Representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and the Ministry of Emergency Situationsmeet with protesters in Neftchala

On November 2, high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, as well as the deputy head of the Executive Office of the Neftchala region met with participants in the protest action held the day before in the village of Yenikend (Mayak) of the Neftchala region, the press service of the Ministry of Ecology and the chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Democracy Emil Mammadov (Salyan) told Turan.

Turan reported about the protest action of fishermen in the village of Yenikend in this publication https://www.turan.az/ext/news/2022/12/free/Social/ru/12322.htm

According to Mammadov, officials of the ministries assured the residents of Nefchtala that the dam being built on one of the branches of the Kura River, at the place where the river flows into the Caspian Sea, will not stop the spawning of sea fish into the river and reduce the level of fishing.

“The meeting was held in the assembly hall of the Yenikend village school. Employees of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said that the dam is being built to prevent sea water from entering the Kura. Local residents agree that the Ministry of Emergency Situations is building a dam on the main part of the river (Ana Kur), while At the same time, they are against the construction of a dam on the small branch of the Kura – (Bala Kur). Residents said that the closure of Bala Kur will lead to the cessation of fishing – the only industry for residents,” Mammadov said.

Representatives of the departments promised that a free five-meter passage in the river would be left for the passage of small vessels into the river from the sea and back, he added.

According to Mammadov, the construction of the dam will lead to stagnant water in the Kura and an increase in the number of mosquitoes, and a decrease in the number of fish in the Kura. “The fish will not rise above Nefchtala. In Neftchala, near the dam, all the fish will be caught by local fishermen close to the local authorities, and there will be no fish in Salyan and upstream,” resident Mammadov told Turan.

Representatives of departments promised residents to continue joint discussions in order to find solutions to emerging problems. The height of the dams is set at 1 meter above the river surface, the foreman who works on the Kura told Turan.
