Shamakhi: A media tour was organized in Shamakhi to acquaint journalists with the conservation efforts at the Pir Omar Sultan shrine, APA reports. The representative of the Mountainous Shirvan Regional Department of Culture for Shamakhi district, Rafail Taghizade, provided insights into the restoration activities taking place.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the site previously known as the Omar shrine remained undocumented for its mausoleum until 2019. Archaeological excavations by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences revealed the mausoleum remains and the tomb of Omar Sultan. In 2020, during a visit by President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, directives were issued to initiate conservation works. The efforts included restoring the monument's surrounding walls made of river stones and rocks, reconstructing the tomb of Pir Omar Sultan, and refurbishing the graves of the disciples in the area. Additional landscaping enhanced the shrine's surroundings. The Heydar Aliyev Foundation supported the completion of these restoration works, and the monument is believed to date back to the mid-14th century.

It is noteworthy that President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva reviewed the conservation progress at the Pir Omar Sultan shrine in Shamakhi on September 17.
