Moscow: An engaging dialogue took place during a joint press conference between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan, APA’s Moscow correspondent reports. The session was marked by a notable exchange when a Russian journalist posed a question regarding Armenia’s ambitions for European Union membership.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the journalist inquired about the timeframe the Armenian government envisions for EU membership and how it plans to reconcile this with its current membership in the Eurasian Economic Union. The question was initially directed at Mirzoyan, but as the journalist turned to ask Lavrov a question, Lavrov suggested that Mirzoyan address the journalist’s query first, saying, “Let Ararat Samvelovich answer!”
Mirzoyan’s response to Lavrov’s suggestion was noteworthy. He asked, “Does Sergey Viktorovich’s answer depend on this?” To which Lavrov replied, clarifying that the question was meant for Mirzoyan, “No, this question is not addressed to me, but to you.”
During his response, Mirzoyan mentioned that the draft law on EU membership is a public document lacking specific terms and mechanisms. He emphasized that the project is an initiative driven by civil society. However, he could not provide a detailed answer regarding the future steps, stating, “What will happen next, we will solve it later. As for the contradiction between the European Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, I cannot judge it or invent something new. If the issue is posed like this, then it will probably be necessary to look into it.”
