Sahiba Gafarova Highlights Azerbaijan’s Commitment to Solidarity and Sustainability at G20 Summit

Cape town: Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 11th Summit of G20 Parliament Speakers in Cape Town, South Africa, emphasizing the importance of solidarity, equality, and sustainability.

According to Trend News Agency, Speaker Gafarova remarked that these themes, chosen by South Africa for its G20 chairmanship, align with global needs and Azerbaijan’s principles.

Speaker Gafarova highlighted Azerbaijan’s dedication to peace and development, referencing President Ilham Aliyev’s recent address at the UN General Assembly. She noted Azerbaijan’s adherence to international law in liberating territories from 30 years of Armenian occupation and initiating a peace process with Armenia, culminating in a peace agreement initialed in Washington in August.

The Speaker informed summit participants about Azerbaijan’s energy and transport projects, emphasizing their role in enhancing energy security and strengthening regional ties. The Zangazur Corridor, she noted, is poised to become a key transport hub, furthering international peace and prosperity.

Gafarova also underscored Azerbaijan’s contributions to global multilateral cooperation, highlighting its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement from 2019-2023 and involvement in humanitarian assistance. The upcoming World Urban Forum and World Environment Day in Azerbaijan next May were mentioned as platforms for advancing global solidarity and sustainability.

Additionally, she discussed the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement, founded in 2021 under President Aliyev’s initiative, showcasing Azerbaijan’s commitment to inter-parliamentary collaboration and diplomacy.

Speakers from G20 Member States and South African leaders also addressed the summit’s opening ceremony.
