Sahiba Gafarova Nominated as Speaker by “New Azerbaijan” Party


BAKU — Sahiba Gafarova has been nominated as the speaker of Azerbaijan’s Parliament following the recent snap parliamentary elections, according to a report by Trend News Agency. The decision was made during a meeting of newly elected Members of Parliament from the “New Azerbaijan” Party.



According to Trend News Agency, the snap parliamentary election took place on September 1. A significant number of observers were present, with 112,749 local observers and 598 international observers from 51 organizations across 69 countries monitoring the election proceedings. The election saw 990 candidates register to compete, out of which 305 were representatives of 25 different political parties. Although 371 of the candidates were affiliated with political parties, they did not receive nominations from those parties. Overall, 676 of the candidates had political party affiliations.



On September 21, the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan approved the results of the election, paving the way for the announcement of the newly elected parliament members and the nomination of Sahiba Gafarova as the potential parliament speaker.
