Sergey Lavrov Announces Azerbaijan’s Support for Russia’s Proposals on Caspian Sea Shallowing Issue

Moscow: Azerbaijan supports Russia's proposals on resolving the issue of the Caspian Sea's shallowing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced during a joint press conference following discussions with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the discussions focused on environmental concerns related to the Caspian Sea, particularly the issue of its decreasing water levels. Lavrov recalled that the President of Azerbaijan initiated a review of these challenges. Azerbaijan has pledged support for Russia's proposals, specifically addressing the shallowing issue.

Lavrov further explained that Russia regularly conducts expert hydrographic expeditions to assess the environmental situation and is committed to supporting initiatives aimed at protecting the Caspian ecosystem. He underscored the urgency of completing the ratification process for the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, noting that all Caspian littoral states, except Iran, have ratified the document. This ratification is crucial for the legal regulation of the Caspian Sea, as countries in the region strive to meet the Convention's obligations.
