Bratislava: Slovakia's Ambassador Elchin Gasimov has emphasized the strategic importance of Slovakia's cooperation with Azerbaijan in the defence industry. The official visit of Azerbaijan's President to Slovakia marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations, opening a new chapter that holds symbolic and political importance.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the visit has paved the way for several strategic initiatives. It includes the launch of a direct air connection between Bratislava and Baku, enhancing tourism and cultural ties. Furthermore, Slovak companies are expected to participate in infrastructure projects in Azerbaijan, potentially financed by Slovak banks under Azerbaijan's state guarantee, which could aid in the socio-economic restoration of Karabakh. The defence sector is also a key area of focus, with both nations looking to exchange innovations and establish joint ventures, thereby enhancing military-industrial cooperation.
In the long term, Slovakia is exploring ways to purchase Azerbaijani gas. The President of Slovakia has highlighted the strategic importance of Azerbaijani natural gas, with current studies examining technical delivery options via the Southern Gas Corridor. This aligns with the European Union's energy diversification goals, with Azerbaijan playing a crucial role in the continent's energy security.
The establishment of joint ventures in the defence industry is ongoing, reflecting Slovakia's historical strengths in producing modern weapons and military equipment. This collaboration is seen as a strategic direction with significant potential for both countries.
Slovakia is also contributing to the restoration of socio-economic life in Karabakh through the 'Smart Village' project in Aghdam. A Slovak company, in collaboration with Azerbaijani partners, commenced construction last year, with the first phase expected to conclude this year, including a new school for 800 students.
High-level official and business visits are planned, with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Chairman of the Slovak National Council Richard Ra…¡i expected to visit Azerbaijan's liberated territories. These visits aim to further cement the dynamic partnership between the two nations.
Slovakia is also keen to engage in the Middle Corridor project, a strategic transport route connecting Asia and Europe. Slovak companies are ready to offer expertise in transport and logistics, infrastructure, and digitalization, aligning with European Union interests in diversifying transport routes and strengthening economic ties with Asia.
On another front, Slovakia has welcomed the initialing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, viewing it as a historic achievement that promises security and economic development in the South Caucasus.
Tourism is another area of focus, with direct flights between Bratislava and Baku set to enhance tourist exchanges. A Slovak Tourist Information Center will soon open in Baku, providing Azerbaijani citizens with information about tourism opportunities in Slovakia.
Despite occasional differences with the European Union over Ukraine, Slovakia remains committed to defending its national interests while maintaining constructive dialogue within the EU and NATO frameworks.
