Smart pavement in UK town generates energy during walking on it

A British town has installed a smart pavement that generates energy from people’s footsteps to power new free phone charging points, according to local media, Anadolu Agency reports.

The high-tech bouncy pavement which enables people to charge mobile phones by turning footsteps into electricity was launched by the Telford and Wrekin Council in Shropshire.

A solar-powered screen also displays the amount of energy that is generated via footsteps between the central train station and the town center in Telford, the British newspaper Metro reported on Sunday.

According to the report, the six-meter (19.6 feet) pavement is a part of a £4 million ($4.71 million) project by the council as part of the measures tackling climate change.

On the project, Councillor Carolyn Healy said that it is a valuable for creating awareness towards generating clean energy and “fun way” to show how it can be generated.
