Baku: Inventory work has been carried out at 575 of the 749 monuments in Azerbaijan's territories liberated from occupation, Sabina Hajiyeva, Head of the State Service for Protection, Development and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, said during her speech on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Hajiyeva stated that 196 of the inventoried monuments are located in the city of Shusha. She explained that field surveys were conducted during the inventory process, leading to the creation of digital maps, photographs, and drone footage of the monuments. Archive documents and other sources were also examined to assess the damage.

Hajiyeva reported that monitoring revealed significant damage to cultural heritage during the occupation, with numerous monuments subjected to destruction and vandalism. A total of 68 monuments in the liberated territories were completely destroyed, with the count in Karabakh and East Zangezur being notably higher. Among the damaged monuments, 115 suffered large-scale destruction, while others experienced varying degrees of damage. The total material damage to 434 monuments is currently estimated at AZN 700.154 million.

The State Service chief further detailed that nine state-registered mausoleums, three cemeteries, and seven mosques in the liberated territories were completely destroyed. Additionally, 25 mosques, 14 mausoleums, and two tombs sustained damage to varying degrees.
