The first stage of the export of “green” energy from Azerbaijan to Europe is designed for 4 GW

The volume of green electricity exports from Azerbaijan to Europe along the bottom of the Black Sea is planned at the level of 4 GW at the first stage, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said. “In February of this year, Baku hosted the first meeting of the steering committee of the green energy export project from Azerbaijan with the participation of ministers of a number of European countries, as well as the Commissioner of the European Commission for Energy. At the very first meeting, we agreed that this would be an integrated project, not like the Southern Gas Corridor with the South Caucasus pipeline, TANAP and TAP. It will be an integrated project from offshore wind farms in the Caspian Sea to consumers in the EU,” Aliyev said in Berlin at a meeting with the heads of leading German companies. The Head of State noted that the volume of power transmission supplies along the bottom of the Black Sea at the first stage of the project is planned at the level of 4 GW. “But for this we need to expand transmission lines in Georgia. Otherwise, it will be absolutely useless,” he said. “We believe that 4 GW is just the beginning. We know the level of demand in Europe. We know the demand in Germany. We are talking about tens of gigawatts, and this demand will grow. We have such capacities. We just need to put all the puzzles together,” Aliyev added. On December 17, 2022, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary signed in Bucharest an agreement on strategic partnership for the construction of an underwater electric cable Black Sea Energy with a length of 1,195 km. The cable will be intended for the supply of “green” electricity produced in Azerbaijan through Georgia and the Black Sea to Romania for subsequent transportation to Hungary and the rest of Europe. At the moment, work on the project is at the stage of developing a feasibility study, which is scheduled to be completed in September 2023. The construction of the cable will take 3-4 years.
