ASHGABAT – Turkmenistan is advancing its commitment to environmental sustainability by setting up a regional climate technology center in its capital, aimed at fostering green energy solutions across Central Asia, ahead of the global climate summit COP29 in Baku.
According to Trend News Agency, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, Dmitry Shlapachenko, shared these developments during the “Economic development of Turkmenistan and its investment potential” panel at the Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF 2024). Shlapachenko highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change in Central Asia, a challenge no single country can face alone. He commended the proactive steps taken by Turkmenistan, supported by the United Nations, to establish the center which will concentrate on climate mitigation technologies and green energy transitions.
The center’s creation aligns with the themes of the TIF 2024, which is currently being held in Ashgabat from September 10-11. This forum draws global investment into Turkmenistan’s economy and features discussions on significant projects like the TAPI pipeline and initiatives in gas chemistry, energy, construction, and transport. The forum, organized by Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Finance and Economy, Foreign Ministry, and Chamber of Commerce and Industry, includes participation from top international firms and experts from UN agencies, S&P Global Commodity Insights, and the World Trade Organization.
Parallel to the discussions, an exhibition showcasing Turkmenistan’s economic accomplishments is also taking place, further highlighting the nation’s strides in various sectors. The upcoming COP29 event in Baku will reveal more detailed outcomes of the initial funding phase for the climate technology center, setting a precedent for regional collaboration on sustainable development.
