Ukraine and Azerbaijan Strengthen Ties Through TRACECA Middle Corridor Initiatives

TRACECA: Ukrainian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Yuriy Husyev and Secretary General of the Permanent Secretariat of the TRACECA Intergovernmental Commission Asset Assavbayev have discussed enhancing cooperation on the Middle Corridor, focusing on boosting economic connections and developing joint infrastructure projects. This collaboration underscores the strengthening of regional partnerships and the active development of the TRACECA program, particularly in its Middle Corridor segment.

According to Trend News Agency, these discussions come as part of ongoing efforts by both countries to leverage the TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) program. TRACECA, initiated with the support of the European Union in 1993, aims to facilitate the transit of goods between Asia and Europe through member countries, which include various states from Eastern Europe, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia. The Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), has seen significant gro
wth, particularly in the last two years, attributed to new geopolitical dynamics.

The recent increase in activity within the Middle Corridor is highlighted by significant cargo transit figures. In 2023, the corridor facilitated the transit of 2.7 million tons of cargo, with the figures for the first nine months of 2024 already surpassing this at 3.4 million tons. Projections for 2024 anticipate cargo transit could exceed 4.2 million tons, indicating a robust upward trend in the utilization of this route.

The discussions between Husyev and Assavbayev reflect a mutual commitment to capitalizing on the strategic advantages of the Middle Corridor, emphasizing not only economic benefits but also the importance of regional stability and cooperation.
