UK’s University of Cambridge Hosts Panel Discussion on Scientific and Practical Aspects of COP29


CAMBRIDGE: The University of Cambridge convened a panel discussion to explore the scientific and practical dimensions of the forthcoming 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, set to take place in Azerbaijan this November.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the event was moderated by Siddharth (Montu) Saxena, a board member of the Scientific Council of the COP29 Presidency, and featured a video presentation outlining preparations for the global conference. Saxena, in his remarks, emphasized the enduring scientific and practical collaboration between Azerbaijan and the University of Cambridge, expressing optimism about Azerbaijan’s capability to successfully host COP29.

Elin Suleymanov, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, addressed the attendees, underscoring the significance of October 18, the Day of Restoration of Independence in Azerbaijan. He characterized the hosting of CO
P29 as a reflection of Azerbaijan’s emergence as a regional leader and its evolution as an independent state over the past 33 years.

Suleymanov also provided insights into COP29’s agenda, which includes climate finance objectives, regulation of carbon markets, and support for small island developing states that are particularly vulnerable to climate change. He mentioned collaborative projects with the Commonwealth and initiatives from the COP29 Presidency, such as the COP Truce initiative.

The event also featured contributions from University of Cambridge professors Sian Dutton, Akshay Rao, Prajakti Karla, and Nicholas Ray, and concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing for an engaging dialogue on the topics discussed.
