US Ambassador on why he did not go to Shusha

The United States welcomes the upcoming meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Brussels and is ready to make efforts to move the parties towards peace, the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Lee Lizenberger said at a meeting with a group of journalists on November 22.

“We have seen in the past that when the leaders of the two countries communicate directly, there are significant results,” he said. The ambassador expressed the hope that the meeting will make it possible to achieve progress in building trust between the parties, without which it is impossible to achieve a settlement of the conflict as a whole.

When asked by Turan why the US ambassador refused to go to Shusha together with other ambassadors, Liezenberger evasively replied that he had visited Zangelan, and the embassy staff had visited Fizuli and Aghdam and he himself would soon visit Aghdam.

“I have visited Nakhchivan, Sheki, Ganja. If there are places where I haven’t been yet, then I will go there when I have the opportunity,” the ambassador said.

When asked what is the reason for the negative attitude of the United States towards the 3 + 3 formula for resolving conflicts in the Caucasus, the diplomat did not give an unambiguous answer. “We are for all three countries of the South Caucasus to be independent, independent and make their own decisions,” he said.
