US sanctions supporters of al-Assad’s regime

The United States Treasury Department sanctioned on Tuesday the Syrian and Lebanese supporters of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over their alleged links to illicit drug production and trafficking, APA reports citing Teletrader.

“Syria has become a global leader in the production of highly addictive Captagon, much of which is trafficked through Lebanon … With our allies, we will hold accountable those who support Bashar al-Assad’s regime with illicit drug revenue and other financial means that enable the regime’s continued repression of the Syrian people,” OFAC Director Andrea Gacki noted.

The individuals designated by the Treasury are Syrian businessman Khalid Qaddour, Assad’s cousins Samer Kamal and Wassim Badi, as well as the regime’s affiliates from Lebanon, Noah Zaitar and Hassan Muhammad Daqqou. Daqqou’s companies Hassan Daqqou Trading and Al-Israa Establishment for Import and Export were also added to the sanctions list.
