BAKU: The Western Azerbaijan Community has expressed strong disapproval of a recent statement made by Krista Pikkat, a UNESCO representative, regarding the dispatch of a mission to Azerbaijan based on claims made by Armenia about cultural monuments in Azerbaijani territory. The community has issued a statement condemning and rejecting the position taken by Pikkat. According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Western Azerbaijan Community finds it unacceptable that the UNESCO representative reiterated what they consider to be Armenia's unfounded claims. The community criticized the representative for failing to address the repeated appeals to UNESCO to investigate the extensive destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage in territories previously occupied by Armenia. They argue that UNESCO's inaction and perceived bias against the Azerbaijani people on religious and ethnic grounds indicate that the organization has become a tool of anti-Azerbaijani policy, allegedly led by France. In their statement, the W estern Azerbaijan Community demanded that UNESCO cease what they describe as slander and discrimination against Azerbaijan and its people. They called for UNESCO to fulfill its responsibilities by investigating Armenia's alleged destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage and to send a special monitoring mission to Azerbaijan to assess the situation.
