World leaders meet in Brest, France for One Ocean Summit-LIVE

French President Emmanuel Macron has brought together governmental, institutional, and business leaders in Brest, France for the first high-level summit dedicated to the world’s pressing maritime issues, APA reports citing Sputnik.

Several heads of state and government will speak at the event, including from Germany, the UK, South Korea, Japan, Canada.

Note that an UN-backed conference on oceans was scheduled to take place in 2021 but was postponed to 2022 due to the pandemic.

One Ocean Summit is held as part of France’s EU Presidency term and its aim is to make “ambitious commitments” for oceanic matter such as illegal fishing, decarbonization, shipping and plastic pollution reduction. UN officials will also participate in the event’s numerous workshops.

The three-day summit, which began on Wednesday, will also focus on improving high seas governance as well as identifying methods to better protect biodiversity and marine ecosystems.
