Yerevan rejects Baku’s proposal for a peace treaty

Armenia will not sign any peace treaty with Azerbaijan under pressure; this is out of the question. Ruben Rubinyan, head of the parliamentary commission on foreign affairs, candidate for the post of Armenian Foreign Minister, said this in an interview with Sputnik Armenia.

Thus, he responded to yesterday’s statement by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, who called on Yerevan to begin the process of normalizing relations “on the basis of inviolability of borders and respect for territorial integrity.”

Rubinyan said that Armenia “will gladly sign a document with Azerbaijan” if Baku recognizes the status of Nagorno-Karabakh based on the will of the people of Karabakh.

He ruled out a scenario in which Yerevan automatically recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. In his opinion, new realities in the region that make impossible Azerbaijan’s new aggression. Among others, this is the presence of Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh.

In addition, the international community, represented by the Minsk Group, believes that the issue of the status of Karabakh remains open and the conflict has not been resolved.
