The Armenian foreign minister’s refusal to hold further discussions with his Russian and Azerbaijani colleagues in Moscow is a very wrong step in terms of establishing regional peace and security. A country defeated in a war should behave more constructively and avoid a new armed conflict if it has a weak army. On the contrary, Azerbaijan, the winning country, is trying to restore stable peace and cooperation in the region. Armenia’s rhetoric of fueling the conflict is difficult to understand, and its stance may have undesirable consequences.
Nurhan al-Sheikh AZERTAC , professor of Cairo University, political scientist, expressed these viewssaid in an interview. He added: “Political science, first of all, is based on realities. After the war that took place in September-November 2020 and ended with the Victory of Azerbaijan, new regional realities emerged. Moscow and the West mediate between the parties based on this geopolitical reality. However, completely contradictory statements are coming from Armenia. Sometimes calls are made for the signing of a peace agreement, sometimes revanchist slogans are raised. I think that this is a non-serious and, first of all, a chaotic situation that will harm the interests of Armenians. Probably, weak government and confusion prevent Armenia from showing a unified and unanimous position. Azerbaijan has kept the Lachin corridor open for the past two years and demands the opening of a corridor to Nakhchivan instead. This is a perfectly logical position. On the other hand, The opening of the Zangezur Corridor will not only give a great boost to regional cooperation, but will also create conditions for the economic development of Armenia. However, as I mentioned above, the conflicting statements of the Armenians and their refusal to discuss complicate the situation.”
The Egyptian political scientist further emphasized: “I have been conducting political research on Russia and the CIS countries for many years, and I have been carefully following the events in the South Caucasus. On the one hand, Armenia claims that its territorial integrity is under threat, and on the other hand, it opposes Moscow’s statements about recognizing its rights in the sovereign territory of Azerbaijan. A logical question arises here; Why did the Armenians, who occupied the territories of neighboring countries for nearly thirty years, not want to leave other people’s lands at that time? They were forced to do this only after losing the war. Armenia, which refused to implement the resolutions of the UN Security Council in those years, surprisingly now addresses appeals to international organizations and accuses official Baku. Here is a way out. Armenians living in Karabakh should accept the laws of this country as citizens of Azerbaijan, and at the same time, Armenia should establish relations with neighboring Azerbaijan and Turkey. There is no other way to achieve lasting peace.”
In the end, Nurhan al-Sheikh said: “Instead of relying on the West and international organizations, the Armenian leadership should build a bridge of trust with neighboring Azerbaijan and Turkey.” Otherwise, the situation may become more desperate and revanchism will create serious consequences. The peoples of Azerbaijan and Armenia need stable peace and progress. I hope that this will be achieved soon as a result of the efforts of official Baku.”
