BAKU — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has named Sunniya Durrani-Jamal as its new Country Director for Azerbaijan, marking a significant step in its ongoing engagement with the country.

According to Trend News Agency, Durrani-Jamal has officially started her tenure today, stepping into a pivotal role where she will oversee the bank's operations and manage its relationships with the government and various stakeholders in Azerbaijan. Her responsibilities include leading the preparation and implementation of the new country partnership strategy (CPS), which aims to align with Azerbaijan’s development goals and ADB's Strategy 2030.

"It is an honor to lead ADB's efforts in Azerbaijan, a country of rich culture and significant economic potential," stated Ms. Durrani-Jamal. Her priorities are set on extending ADB’s longstanding collaboration with the Azerbaijani government to help diversify the economy and enhance the quality of life for its citizens. Key focus areas under her leadership will include expanding renewable energy, addressing climate change challenges, and supporting the transition to a private-sector-led green economy.

Since Azerbaijan became a member of the ADB in 1999, the bank has committed more than $5 billion in sovereign and private sector assistance. This funding has supported a range of projects across transport, energy, healthcare, and agriculture sectors.

ADB continues its mission to achieve a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, maintaining a strong focus on eradicating extreme poverty. Established in 1966, ADB is composed of 69 members, including 49 from within the region.
