Baku: 'Azerbaijan Railways' CJSC (ADY), a subsidiary of AZCON Holding, is advancing its initiative to upgrade its locomotive fleet and enhance freight transport capabilities. Seven state-of-the-art AC50-type freight locomotives, produced by CRRC Ziyang Co., Ltd. of China, have recently arrived in Baku, marking a significant step in this ongoing effort.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, these mainline locomotives boast cutting-edge technologies and innovative traction systems, delivering high traction power and substantial fuel capacity. These features facilitate the efficient and safe movement of heavy freight trains while incorporating modern control and safety systems. The locomotives are designed for a 90-day maintenance interval, contributing to more reliable and continuous operations. With a main air reservoir capacity of 2,000 liters of compressed air and two compressors, the locomotives can haul longer trains, enhancing operational efficiency.

Additionally, the AC50 models can be paired and operated by a single locomotive crew, thereby increasing the rail transport capacity and optimizing the use of resources. They comply with the Stage IIIA environmental standards of the International Union of Railways (UIC), permitting their unrestricted use in zones with specific emissions regulations. These new locomotives are set to facilitate freight transit along international transport corridors.

Azerbaijan Railways is committed to continuing its fleet renewal strategy, aiming to expand the technical capacity of its rolling stock for both freight and passenger services. This commitment is crucial as freight volumes increase along international transport routes. Negotiations for the acquisition of 14 additional freight locomotives are currently underway, signaling the next phase of this expansive project.
