Baku: Azerbaijan has made significant strides in updating the master plans for 68 of its 79 cities, with preparations underway for the remaining 11 cities, as revealed by Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture. This initiative was discussed during the ministers' meeting at the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, since 2018, Azerbaijan has been pursuing an integrated and future-oriented approach to territorial planning. This strategy aligns with the five national priorities for socio-economic development that were approved by President Ilham Aliyev in 2021. Guliyev highlighted that a large-scale modernization effort has been underway in the field of territorial planning, showcasing the updated master plans as evidence of this commitment.
The Baku Master Plan 2040 stands as a significant example of Azerbaijan's new planning philosophy, focusing on a polycentric and compact city model. The plan emphasizes integrated public transport, a pedestrian-oriented urban environment, urban regeneration, and the creation of high-quality public spaces. Additionally, Azerbaijan has taken steps to strengthen construction legislation, building standards, and urban planning regulations. The construction permit system has also been fully digitalized, reflecting the country's commitment to modernizing its urban infrastructure.
