Baku: The reconstruction works in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories have reached an impressive stage, with significant progress being made on the Azerbaijani side of the Zangazur Corridor.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the infrastructure development from Horadiz to Aghband highlights the rapid restoration of life in the once-devastated lands of Karabakh and East Zangazur. The ongoing projects, including the Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Aghband highway and the Horadiz-Aghband railway, are crucial for Azerbaijan’s economic future.
Javad Alovsatov, a Construction Manager at Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, outlined that the Horadiz-Aghband railway is being constructed in three stages. The first stage has seen significant progress, with cargo transportation already taking place. The second stage is marked by the construction of Azerbaijan’s longest railway bridge. In the third stage, tunnel construction is ongoing, with 68 percent of the 110-kilometer railway line completed.
Meanwhile, Ziyaddin Hasanov from the State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads reported that the Horadiz-Jabrayil-Zangilan-Aghband highway is nearing completion, with 95 percent of the main road finished. The road includes multiple interchanges, tunnels, and bridges, with the full project expected to be completed by the second half of next year.
These infrastructure projects are pivotal for the realization of Azerbaijan’s Zangazur Corridor concept, facilitating a land connection to Nakhchivan and a transportation route to Turkey and Europe. Once completed, they will enhance Azerbaijan’s role as a key logistics hub, enabling the transportation of an additional 15 million tons of cargo annually through the Middle Corridor.
The Zangazur Corridor, referred to internationally as the TRIPP, is poised to reshape the geoeconomic landscape of the South Caucasus. Its legal foundation was established in the 2020 trilateral declaration, and it has since evolved into a tangible economic reality. With ongoing construction of alternative routes like the Araz Corridor, Azerbaijan is set to fulfill its commitments within the Eurasian transportation network by mid-2026.
The completion of these projects will not only bolster Azerbaijan’s economic position but also pave the way for regional prosperity, offering a strategic transit hub within Eurasia. Azerbaijan’s commitment to the Zangazur Corridor underscores its dedication to regional development and cooperation, as evidenced by its continued efforts to connect with neighboring Armenia for the advancement of the South Caucasus.
